Keep decor simple, keep to clean lines and clean counters are essential. Contemporary bathroom designs do not allow for a lot of storage, so keep your storage needs in mind when deciding if this modern design is right for your space. If you need to have your hairdryer, contact lens case, cosmetic bag or shaving kit all at arm's reach on the counter at all times, you may want to rethink your contemporary choice. Cluttered counters and contemporary design just don't work well together; counters have to be almost completely bare in order to create that signature stark look and admittedly that can be very hard to maintain. That is why choosing the right vanity is key.

2. Vanity

 The vanity is an extremely important element in the contemporary bathroom because it is usually the only storage piece in the room. You want to look for a vanity that has sharp angles, streamline hardware, and lots of storage. Dark colors and woods, even black, work best to create that bold look. Avoid vanities that have ornate designs, carved doors, and rounded edges as this will age the piece.

3. Countertop

 Along with a bold vanity, your countertop should make a statement. In a contemporary bathroom it will spend most of its time with little on it, so splurge on distinct textures that can stand alone as design elements. Stone and wood countertops, such as dark granite or bamboo, are very popular in contemporary design. Stay away from marble countertops as these tend to make the room feel more traditional instead of modern.

4. Backsplash

 A bold backsplash goes hand in hand with the distinct countertop. In a design where there is very little room for frivolous decoration, the backsplash is a great opportunity to add your own unique touch. A backsplash constructed of colored glass tile, sea glass or polished stones adds flair to the space and still keeps the contemporary style. However, steer clear of ceramic tiles, and anything painted or flowery: the more ornate it is the more dated your room will look.

5. Wall Color

 When decorating your contemporary bathroom, cool colors work best on the walls, as do neutral tones. Look to your backsplash for inspiration on what color to choose. If you decide to go with a bold color use it only on an accent wall, as overuse of bright colors will make your bathroom feel juvenile, not contemporary.

6. Faucets & Fixtures

 If there is one design element that takes priority when decorating a contemporary bathroom it would be the faucet. In order to create a contemporary look you have to use a sleek faucet with sharp angles. There is absolutely no exception: a modern faucet is a must in a modern bathroom. The same goes for the hardware throughout your room. Get rid of the crystal knobs and ornate pulls and replace them with sleek, chrome handles and fixtures.

7. Tub

 The contemporary bathroom can work with any standard tub or shower design with one obvious exception: no antique claw foot tubs. You can modify any other existing shower or tub to fit your contemporary design by upgrading to angular faucets and vertical rain showerheads. Also, keep in mind that glass shower doors and dividers lend themselves more toward modern decor over ruffled shower curtains.

8. Linens

 Linens are a great way to add a bit of color to your contemporary bathroom, but there are a few rules to follow that will ensure you maintain a modern look. First and foremost avoid patterns: no stripes, no floral and no scenic borders. Pick one striking color and carry it throughout the whole space. Mixing and matching colors will distract from the sophisticated design you are trying to achieve. Again, contemporary style is based on simplicity, so make sure that you use the same color for your towels, your bathmats, and if you must have one, your ruffled shower curtain.

9. Window Treatments

 What about the curtains you ask? Do they need to be the same color as well? You can actually avoid the curtains all together. Plantation shutters or blinds are really all that you need for window treatments in your contemporary bathroom. Their sleek looks are much more modern than a frilly valance. However, if you wish to go with a more colorful window treatment, choose a roman shade in the same color as your linens.

10. Extra Décor Elements

 Decorations are tricky in a contemporary bathroom: you have to walk a fine line. Soft decor elements are something you shouldn't overdo in contemporary decor but you can't overlook them either, otherwise your space will look uninviting. Try adding a tall vase of flowers or bamboo stalks next to the vanity or a framed piece of artwork to break up a bare wall. A clear container filled with sea glass gives a fresh feel to the traditional toothbrush holder, and finally, candles add a beautiful glow transforming your contemporary bathroom into your own relaxing oasis.
