Big Box is the biggest of the 4 Warehouse Retail Scheme ("WRS"); the other three warehouse retail stores under the scheme are owned by retailers Courts, Ikea, and Giant, located in Tampines in the East. Situated next to the busy Jurong East MRT Station and spanning a whopping 5.6ha of land area. "The Big Box - Something for Everyone" is supposedly a new concept that targets to offer a brand new shopping experience to consumers for all their home and lifestyle needs and home improvement requirements. This new concept of "Stores in Store" combines a wide excellent product mix that is slated to offer great savings and a unique shopping experience to consumers.

We went down to take a look at the Retail Mall last weekend and here are some photos to share:

Ample carpark spaces; I think there are more than 5 levels of carpark.

 Level 1
Where the most of the F&B stalls are located. The HyperMart is located on the 1st floor.

Yale Digital Locks!

Vertical garden made of fake plants.

Portable car wash.

Hello Kitty themed lunch boxes, thermal flasks and so on.

These goes well with SMEG fridges!

Extensive range of wine collection.

Animal themed door-stoppers and table mats.

Compact sleeping bags. Very useful for campers.

Level 2
Where the Electronics and Home Furniture and Furnishing stores are found.

Mayer Air Fryer going for $98 nett only.

Washer and Dryer at less than $800 in total, seems like a good deal!

French Home Furnishing brand, Habitat made its presence at Big Box retail mall.

Compact dining table at less than 1k. However I remember that Crates and Barrel is retailing a similar model at $800 plus.

A reasonably sized kitchen island at less than $400.

Raoul?! Raoul is the homegrown fashion and leather goods brand from the house of F J Benjamin btw...and this kitchen cart is retailing at less than $200.

This is very cheap, 2 foldable chairs for $7.90!

Level 3
More furniture from Barang Barang.

A small canteen selling local dishes.

Outdoor furniture for balconies and gardens.

My Take?
One advantage of having a large space is that it can offer a more extensive range of products at its megastore; under the same roof as its warehouse. If people are going to take the effort to travel all the way to the West, they’re going to look for attractive lower prices.

However, for Big Box Retail Mall I do not think that the general prices are attractive enough for me to travel all the way to shop there since I do not see significant savings in terms of time and transport costs.

Based on how the Courts, Ikea and Giant has performed at the Tampines (for the uninitiated, Ikea and Giant is doing pretty well but not Courts), I would think that the HyperMart at Big Box will be the best performer.
